From the GK

It is September already! We have busy and exciting month ahead as you can see by the calendar.

Have you signed up for TMIY? Now is the time to do so.  Join with the many of us participating. TLC is also starting up.

September is National Hunger Month and you are asked to support Catholic Parish Outreach through” H2O for Hunger.” See Brother John Rombout or myself for details.

There is an Op. Lamb kick off breakfast on 9/19 at St. Francis. You are invited to join Larry Opanasenko, Lamb Secretary, and other Brothers attending this event.

You don’t want to miss the Wives’ Appreciation Dinner that same night at 7 PM in the St. Luke’s Hall. Just bring a dinner for you and your wife as we show our appreciation for their support. There will be a sign up sheet at the Business Meeting or call Frank Sancineto. If you don’t sign up, I am going to tell your wife!

Note also the Forum on Health Care Reform and Catholic Teaching that our Council is sponsoring on Wednesday, September 30 at St. Luke’s. This is an opportunity to get clarification on our Church’s position as it relates to health care reform. See the later details.

Finally, there is Adopt a Highway and a Corporate Mass scheduled this month. There is more but I have run out of space.  See you at the meeting?

New Brothers

Congratulations to our new First Degree Knights:  Chris Bagin, George Hogg, and Joe Hurray, Nine men took the first step in Knighthood at the August 12th exemplification held at St. Luke’s.  The degree was observed by a good number of our members and it was conferred by our Council 1st Degree Team.

Please introduce yourselves to and give a hearty welcome to our new Brother Knights, when you have a chance.

Member Survey

To date only 24 of 130 members have completed our annual survey of volunteer and service hours.  Supreme annually requests that each council document member hours doing good works.  This substantiates K of C's tax-exempt status and tracks the extent charitable and community service rendered by Knights    Last year Council 12455 gave an estimated 18,600 hours to church, community, family, youth, and council activities.

If you have not yet taken a few minutes to fill out the survey, please copy this site your browser: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2bCnfo5NUPj_2bz7sqVHKOv7Q_3d_3d.  Then click on the categories of service.

If you need a paper questionnaire to respond, contact Jim Haag (841-5817).

Even though your voluntary hours may not be “specifically” a Knight’s program, please consider that the essence of Knighthood is giving all sorts of charitable service.  You are a Knight and thus doing the work of a Knight. Finally, note: please estimate the number of hours only from January through June 2009.

H. B. 3200

President Obama’s Health Care Reform proposal is articulated in the over 1,000 page House Bill 3200.  North Carolina’s two Catholic Bishops, while supporting the need for health care reform in the nation, want to have a strong voice in shaping the current health care reform legislation and its content and focus.  They requested that all NC Catholics inform themselves on the issues and threats to Catholic teachings included in this overwhelming bill.  In particular, the bishops are very concerned about the bill’s implicit funding of abortion services (within the family planning provisions) as well as its threats to conscience rights of health providers.    In their August 20 Catholic Voice NC letter the bishops ask that Catholics contact members of Congress and express their views and concerns about proposals and provisions in HB 3200.

Council 12455’s Public Policy group is sponsoring a nonpartisan informational panel for St. Luke’s parish Wednesday evening, September 30.  The purpose is to explain the legislative proposal and Catholic teachings and principles that are challenged by provisions now in HB 3200.

The meeting will start at 7 PM in the St. Luke’s hall and end by 9 PM.  Panelists include representatives from the Diocese of Raleigh and Catholic physicians.  Detailed information will follow in the St. Luke’s Bulletin. For further information contact Jim Haag, PGK and Council Director of Public Policy.

Operation Lamb

This is North Carolina’s annual Tootsie Roll Drive.  Each Brother  is asked to spend at least a couple of hours outside a local food store, offering free Tootsie Rolls to all passers-by and, by doing so, accepting contributions to assist persons with intellectual disabilities (including mental retardation).

Operation LAMB sign-up is well under way.  For example, at the August Council meeting, 14 Brothers volunteered to fill slots to collect funds at food store venues. Later this month all other Brother Knights will be asked to sign-up for two hour slots -- at Council meetings and via email. With two sites to staff this year, Harris Teeter (Falls of the Neuse and Durant) and Kroger (Falls and Strickland) we need your help to make this another successful fundraiser for the mentally handicapped. The Operation Lamb fundraiser takes place on October 9-11 and 16-18 weekends.

This past spring Raleigh K of C Councils awarded $45,000 to 8 local non- profit organizations that help mentally handicapped:

   Tammy Lynn

   Wake Enterprises

   Community Partnership

   ARC of Wake County

   Wake County Autism Society

   Frankie Lemmon School

   Hilltop Home

   Learning Together

Since Operation Lamb started in 1974, the North Carolina Knights have raised over $16 million for this worthy cause. Tax deductable donations must be made our to LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc., an IRS charitable 501(c)(3) organization ID# 56-2139696

Additional donations from individuals and local companies cover the overhead cost of candy and aprons. All money "raised on the street" goes directly to programs helping people that are afflicted with the varied forms of intellectual disabilities.

Can You Help!

Consider giving time for at least one Council Program.  Involvement is the way to get to know your Brother Knights and to get the most out of belonging to our order. Contact Bob Beasley or the appropriate Project Leader to add your name.

Word to the Wise

A friend of mine needed to replace a kitchen floor due to a pin hole leak in the water line to his refrigerator’s ice maker.  He did not turn off his water before leaving for a vacation. The leak caused the floor to buckle and took two weeks to dry and de-mould before the floor could be replaced at a cost of $3,200.  Of course there are other water leak risks: the toilet water supply, an old water heater, water heater clogged drain or just a pipe leak.

It’s a good idea to turn off your water before leaving for vacation.
